San Antonio Native Karen Arredondo, winner of the COSA Individual Artist Grant has created an original play series, Part 1 to be showcased as 2024’s grant project. Inspired from the icons of Don Clemente’s Loteria, Arredondo has written a full length play to be shown in three parts at two different venues currently scheduled for Winter of 2025. This nontraditional format allows more audiences to experience a theatrical work in a more reasonal timeframe. Each “episode” of Part 1 is expected to run approximately 30-45 minutes in length. Karen purposely chose to create a world where dialog was not always the central focal piece of storytelling. Movement work, used in performing arts allows for nonverbal communication to give a more personal response to the story. The play approaches themes of duty vs desire, self-expression, and family dynamics.
